We join all the peace-loving South Africans and the world in remembering and celebrating an outstanding South African who stood side-by-side with the other Rivonia Trialists to fight against a system that was eventually declared by the United Nations a crime against humanity. Denis Goldberg served all the people of South Africa with distinction, a nonracialist, disciplined individual, values-driven, self-effacing and a true humanitarian.
He was there during the most difficult times when many South Africans had been reduced to non- citizens by an inhumane system. He stood his ground to conform to the world that all South Africans were equal regardless of race as well as origin and no unjust government or system had the right to deny them this birthright and human right.
Throughout his life he embraced the wisdom and commitment that was expressed by our leader Inkosi Albert Luthuli when he eloquently said:
“I believe that here in South Africa, with all our diversities of colour and race; we will show the world a new pattern for democracy. There is a challenge for us to set a new example for all. Let us not sidestep this task.”
He stayed true to this pronouncement and gave his best to achieve this noble objective. Current and future generations must follow in his footsteps and those of our leaders, such as Inkosi Albert Luthuli in pursuit of this objective.
He goes down in history as one of the outstanding and exemplary leaders and a servant of South Africa and the world.
As we commemorate your wonderful life, thank you to the Goldberg family for sharing with South Africa and the world this outstanding human being.
